A number of organization still do confuse Sales and Marketing as same function. Assign the responsibility of marketing to their Sales guys. I have done the same myself.
So here are two cents of what I have observed.
Marketing is like spreading net for geese. And Sales is shooting the trapped geese.

Now Marketing is all about reaching your target audience. Being present at the time and place when they are looking for service providers like you..Being searched by right people.
Sales is then the process of understanding and meeting the requirements. Be able to get that final sign off ..whoops it takes a while and effort.
