How to use twitter

January 2nd, 2009

A rapid growth of social networking has been observed in 2008. Organizations have started taking Web 2.0 seriously for promoting themselves & exhibiting authority in their industry.

Social networking platforms like myspace, facebook, orkut, twitter, blogging etc. have become an integral part of daily lives of millions of people.

Social networking sites are offering people new and varied ways to communicate via internet, not only using the traditional desktop or laptop computers but also handheld devices and mobile phones. There are thousands of applications available on the Internet to make such communication convenient.

Of late, Twitter has been gaining popularity as a great microblogging platform.

To be very honest, initially I did not find it very interesting or engaging. I opened an account but did not update it. Few days back, I thought of giving it a try again and ever since, I’ve been more and more active on Twitter. In my opinion, it is an interesting medium to share thoughts, observations, information or viewpoints - just in 140 characters or less! Also, with the help of RSS, I can keep track of my friends, family, housemates, and influential industry players using just one feed.

In this post, I am trying to highlight some important aspects of Twitter (you can see some most useful Twitter tools in our previous post…)

The objective of today’s post is to elaborate on:

• How to use Twitter

• How can we make it more useful for business promotion

• How to make friends on Twitter

• Is it a game of quality or quantity?

So let’s start…..

Before starting, you should know your objective. You should be very clear about the purpose of creating the profile. There might be several objectives like:

  • Driving traffic to your blog/ website
  • Networking with people with similar interest or making friends
  • Branding and business promotion

It is very important to define the objective as it will impact the profile & activities. For example, if branding is the purpose then you need to make your profile very professional & need to take care of the quality of updates, otherwise it might harm the brand’s reputation. If the objective is to use Twitter for branding, you should upgrade the profile & page looks to make it unique. It is good to tell others about your social media profiles, blogs and company websites – it indicates that that you are open, approachable and available for business.

Bluewavemedia’s Twitter profile is a good example of branding.

Once you have your Twitter objectives set you need to work towards them. You need to create your account on Twitter and enhance your profile by updating your Bio, Location, Website URL etc. This is very important as it will help others to find you on Twitter. For example, profiles with location or real names are more likely to turn up in a Twitter search..

You can also change the look & feel of your Twitter page. You can customize the background theme and make it more professional with the help of free applications like http://www.mytweetspace.com/ . You can brand your Twitter profile with a custom badge by including your Company logo, brand name, website, email ID and more.

Now, you are ready to start with Twitter! J It is fun - you can share your updates within 140 characters, make friends, learn about new and happening things, quickly and easily.

Now, you can start making friends. Don’t panic, and don’t be shy - it’s easy to make friends on Twitter. (You can find the tips within this post)

You can follow others on Twitter. Following someone simply means receiving their Twitter updates. How you receive the updates (on your phone, IM, or just on the web) is up to you. You can set your following preferences based on device, and then set notification preferences for each person you follow. Your followers are those who have chosen to receive your twitter updates.

But remember, it is not a following contest. So be selective while following others otherwise you will be overwhelmed with thousands of updates in a day. Follow peers, employees, influencers, important customers, press etc. To follow others, check the profile page of the person (you can search friends & others with Find People option) and click the follow button.

Now the next step is to get followers or make friends.

It’s really easy to make friends on twitter. I am listing out some great ways of getting followers.

If you are a BIG name in the industry then it is matter of days for you to get thousands of followers. People will search for you and start following you to get your updates. But if you are not famous and new to industry, even then you can make friends….how? Let me elaborate….

1- In Twitter, there are people whom you follow and they will start following you. It’s really very easy as I have seen many people with no updates but hundreds of followers – acquired just by following others. But I don’t like this way of getting followers because it does not add any value. You should focus more on creating value. You need to follow influencers and experts in your niche. Believe me - it will be a learning experience for you. You may start by following bloggers who showcase their Twitter profiles on their sites or blogs or use Twitter Search. This makes more sense.

2- Integrating your Twitter profile into your blog/ websites. Ask readers of your blog to follow you and your existing visitors will start following you quickly.

3- Help others. The more you help others by answering their questions or by providing them useful information, more and more people will start following you. However, this is a time consuming process of getting followers. At the same time, this the most effective way to establish relationships with followers and influencers.

4- Put your Twitter profile ID in the signature of emails.

5- Join conversations & show healthy participation. Follow the right people and join conversations to start expanding your network. I personally often help other people on Twitter by forwarding posts and links to them when they have questions and I know the answer.

6- Give valuable information rather promoting self content. There should be perfect mix of promotional updates and general informative conversation.

7- Organize contests/ polls through your Twitter profile. This is effective only if you are able to get participants.

8- Ask questions and get feedback / advice.

9- Be the first to break latest news

10- Be frequent and prompt in updates

Twitter is really a good way to communicate with others. Use it properly and it can give you more traffic, enhance brand awareness, and boost your sales. Happy twitting!!

5 SEO Tactics to Bring 1000’s of Visitors every Day!

December 19th, 2008

In this competitive online world, SEO is not an easy task. However, we can make it little bit simpler by putting consistent efforts in the right direction.

Here are 5 SEO tactics which can change your visitor stats in one day.

1. Right Keywords: Focusing on the right keywords is the most important factor in achieving high rankings in SERPs. We need to do a complete analysis of keywords & take care of the following things:

· Find out how many searches are made each day for our chosen keywords

· Analyze our competitor’s keywords

· Write quality content around our targeted keywords

· Initially, we shouldn’t try to work on single word keywords (generally with very high competition), but rather try to focus on a few long tail keywords with less competition & moderate traffic.

2. Quality Content: content quality is another crucial factor for getting high rankings. We should always try to provide quality content, with useful & unique information, to engage our visitors. Relevant & highly targeted content is very helpful in getting good rankings in SERPs & also getting back links. Providing quality content is vital for SEO success.

3. On Page optimization: On page factors (Title & Meta tags, keywords density, internal linking etc) play a major role in search engine crawling and indexing of the content. We must make sure that all our pages are SEO friendly and that all our pages can be reached from our homepage - no pages should be more than three levels away from the homepage. Implementing a sitemap listing all the major pages can improve our site’s accessibility to search engines. We also need to ensure that all the Meta tags such as title, description, keywords are optimized.

Internal linking structure & anchor text optimization are also helpful to make site search engine & user friendly.

4. Link Building: It is still the most effective way to heighten the Page Rank of our website’s pages & subsequently, our search engine rankings. We must ensure that we get back links from relevant sites related to our niche market. The ‘anchor text’ must be related to our keywords. The text and overall quality of the content linking to our site should also be kept in mind,

5. Social Networking: Social networking has become an integral part of business promotion these days. Social media sites, news sites and social communities are very helpful - these include a whole range of social sites like MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter; media news sites like Digg, SlashDot, Technorati. We must get our content into social networking if we want to take full SEO advantage of Web 2.0 sites. We should be joining these sites and using them. It’s time consuming, but it will help our website’s popularity. One simple thing we must do is to put social bookmark buttons on all our pages so that our visitors can easily bookmark our content for us. We can use a WordPress plug-in. I like using the simple free site/service from Addthis.com which gives me a simple button to put on all my content.

We should always try to optimize our site for both Search Engines & Users.

The Web Directories

December 3rd, 2008

In our last blog, we wrote about the web directories and the difference between directories and search engine web pages. There, we mentioned five categories of directories as Human Edited, User Categorized, User Classified, Independently Classified and Pay Per Click (PPC).

Here, let us shed some more light on each of these categories.

Human Edited (Categories)

This is a ‘traditional’ directory and is considered as one of the prestigious directories. This type of Directory is relatively hard to maintain as it is labor intensive and hence expensive. Why? Because, each listed site is ‘hand picked’ and reviewed by a human editor. It is a general assumption that the editor is an ‘expert’ in his/her field and will select only appropriate sites. I too personally believe that in spite of availability of various electronic regulatory means, only the scrutiny of an independent human reviewer can ensure the quality and suitability of a web site.

Such directories usually define acceptance rules very clear. The strict quality control ensures the quality of search results. Involvement of man power at various stages explains why many such directories are using volunteers to do the work. Yahoo, Dmoz, Joeant and Gimpsy and other directories fall under this category. Till now, you would have understood why it is more important to submit your site to these directories.

User Categorized

These directories are structured in a very similar way as the Edited Directory but it is the user’s decision to place his site in the most appropriate category. This makes the directory updating job somehow easy for the Directory Owner and on the other side users also get the freedom to place their site in any category of their choice. You may get benefits from registering in such a directory but make sure that you consider all the relevant aspects. The example of one such directory is Websquash.

User Classified

In the directories of this category, sites are classified by keywords used by the Site Owner in Meta Tags of the home page. The submitted site is classified by many keywords through a fully automatic process. Registration process in these directories is found comparatively easy and the sorting algorithm has very little to go by. Hence, the position of the site in the search results doesn’t mean much. Use of more popular and common keywords makes the rank competition tough. On the other hand, selecting a rare combination of keywords may also bring problem of mismatching with the keyword or phrase placed for search. ExactSeek is one of the better known directory of this category. Use of Alexa ranking system is the key feature of this directory.

Independently Classified

For such a site to achieve prominence requires a larger number of users willing to donate their time and effort to that rating activity. Instead of letting the Site Owner decide which keywords should be used for finding his site, this type of directory allows every user to determine the relevancy of keywords. This type of directory allows the users to examine and determine relevancy of keywords to sites. Each user may choose to rate a random site and voice his/her opinion about the relevancy of specific keywords. The best example for such a site is Netnose.

Pay Per Click (PPC)

Technically, PPC Directories are of User Classified type. The business model of these directories implies some significant characteristics. Site Owners are expected to be familiar with these parameters. Being listed in a PPC directory never helps to increase Link Popularity with search Engines. A link from a PPC is never a direct or simple link. A link from PPC directory remains in place just till the user’s account is cash positive. PPC Directories try to maximize their revenues by encouraging Site Owners to bid for as many keywords as they can.

Nowadays, most users rely on search engines, not directories, to get the desired info. But, at the beginning of web era, users used to rely upon directories to find relevant sites. You would have heard about ‘rank of website’. Now, I will share the information about the development of ranking system.

When search engines started to gain popularity, they relied on web pages and keyword tags, to determine the topic and relevance of the page. Very soon, Webmasters realized that by stuffing keyword tags with popular search terms that are repeated hundreds of times, they would propel their pages to the top of the search results. Seeing the bad affect of this practice, Search engines decided to ignore the tags and to rely upon web page content. As a result, Webmasters started to overstuff their web content with popular search terms. Writing the keywords in the same color as the web page’s background was also a similar tactic. These keywords were detected by the search engines while they remained invisible to the readers.

Search engines discovered this trick also and decided to rank a web page’s content and its topical relevance on the basis of inbound links from other pages. The logic behind this practice was that it is much more difficult to influence other people to link to you than to manipulate web content.

There are several ways to get inbound links. Writing articles, exchanging links and listing your site in directories etc. are some common practices to get inbound links to promote the rank. I will tell you about this very important aspect in my later blog because, first, it is better to have fair idea of some more basic terms and steps, involved in rank promotion or SEO work. So, keep on guessing- what is next?

Difference between Search Engine and Web Directory

December 3rd, 2008

In the following post we will share basic info about Web Directories.

Web Directory is web search tool that is compiled manually by human editors. After submission of a website, information about title and content are assessed by an editor. After doing thorough analysis following the certain parameters, submitted website is listed under one or more subject categories. Users can search that website in a directory using relevant keywords or phrases. As an alternative, they can even browse through the subject hierarchy. I hope you would have heard about Yahoo and Open Directory Project like directories.

I come across many people who actually don’t know about the basic difference between search engine and directory. The major difference between the both is the human factor. A website directory indexes a website based on independent description of a site. Directories perform the same function of a webpage search engine but their indexing format is different. The other difference between directories and search engines is that directories don’t spider your site to gather information related to keyword filled in the search box. Instead they rely on a few text entries like site title, domain name and description. The results of search engines are based on the search conducted by a program (crawler) but the results of directories search depend upon the relevance of the available content loaded and edited manually in directories.

Directories contain number of websites, which can be categorized according to theme or industry. Directories contain many sub-directories. For example automobile related sites are placed in one sub-directory, sports sites are placed into the other sub-directory. So, you may see directories as the pool or common platform of various web sites.

Today, you can find the directories on the web for almost any category you could name. Together, the directories form a hierarchy, or tree structure. Some search engines add general directories to their web pages. While helping the Internet surfers in their search, these general directories also place banner ads on their search engine. This encourages some users to spend more time on their web sites. Some directories charge for placing the ads while some place ads free of cost just to attract more traffic. When you place an advertisement or banner on the directory, you get the benefit of website rank improvement and product/service promotion.

Web directories often allow site owners to submit their site for inclusion. Editors review these submissions and include the website once it qualifies the set guidelines. A web directory is a directory on World Wide Web (WWW) that specializes in linking other web sites and categorizing those links.

Directories can be divided into 5 categories:

So, now you are familiar with the web directories. We will deal with these 5 categories in our next blog post.

History of Search Engines

December 1st, 2008

To a large extent, Google can be credited for making the presence of search engines felt in the advertising industry as well as among the general public. But in reality search engine was created long before Google came in the scenario. Worlds’ first search engine was built by Alan Emtage who studied at the University of McGill in the year 1990. The search engine was christened as Archie. But on the flip side, internet was not present. The only mean to share information was File Transfer Protocol (FTP).

The FTP technique was suitable to work in small clusters nonetheless the information became more divided when it was gathered. The search engine Archie facilitated in resolving the predicament of data fragmentation by uniting the dual process of data gathering and standard phrase recognition for identifying the query posed by an internet surfer. In actual fact, Archie got converted into a catalogue of the names of network files.

The prominence of Archie raised to such an extent that in the year 1993, the system computing services team of Nevada University created replica model of it and called it Veronica. The only difference between the two was that veronica operated on basic transcript records. On the other hand, in the Minnesota University another substitute to Archie was produced by Mark Mchill and was named as Gopher.

After that another type of confrontation arose on how to computerize the method. As a result the first web machine or robot was launched. Such kinds of robots are purely software programs that computerize tedious jobs with such a swift speed that are considered for human beings to achieve. Internet robots can locate authentic Uniform Resource Locator.

In the end of 1993, RBSE (Repository –based software engineering spider), Jump station and WWW (World Wide Web) worm were the three search engines supplied with bot were created. In the following year, Web Crawler was made public by Washington University; it was created by Brian Pinkerton. Web Crawler was first of its kind to do alphabetical listing of a full page. It became so famous amongst the internet users that even during working hours in the day it could not be used. In the long run, AOL acquired it and used it on their system.

Excite re-launched Web Crawler in 1997 and as a result AOL started utilizing the services of Excite to power drive Net Find. After first year of its launch, many more similar services made their debut in the world of internet, such as, Info Seek, Open text, & Lycos.

However, the search engine industry was revolutionized by the introduction of Google in 1998. It was one of the most influential, efficient and simple search engines that have been built till the age. Google categorized web pages by implementing a vital notion of inferred assessment suitable to incoming web links. This particular process makes the working of internet more independent considering that every web link is like a vote in an election. Search Engine Google is such a rage that even its competitors, like, Yahoo or AOL have approved it to possess majority of its searches on the internet.

Market share of various search engines

December 1st, 2008

You would have heard about ‘Google’, ‘Yahoo’ and MSN like popular search engines but there are many others too which are not so popular but have registered their presence in internet world.

No doubt, ‘Google’ is an undisputed market leader of search engine industry. It is a crawler based search engine and provides comprehensive knowledge about the available websites related to a particular topic. A search conducted through Google gives maximum results. According to an estimate, more than 250 million searches are made on Google everyday.

Now, I will tell you about the second largest player in the industry. Yes, it is ‘Yahoo’. As per the recently conducted survey, Yahoo has about 11% of search engines market share. Do you know that initially Yahoo was launched as a human based directory but after some time, in 2002, it became Crawler based search engine like Google. Till early 2004, Yahoo was powered by Google and after that ‘Yahoo’ people started to use their own technology. Now, both are tough competitor of each other. MSN is another popular search engine that shares about 3% market. MSN search was launched in 1998.

Besides these three search engines of prime category, less popular search engines like Overture, AskJeeves and AOL etc too have registered their presence in the search engine industry.

‘Overture’ was the first search engine that was introduced with PPC program.

Another search engine ‘AskJeeves’ initially came in to lime light during 1998 -1999 because of being “natural language” search engine. At the starting stage, it was run by around 100 editors who monitored search logs but today this too has become crawler-based search engine. The main feature of AskJeeves is that it lets you search by asking questions and responds with what seemed to be the right answer. Due to this unique feature, AskJeeves has been voted as the Most Outstanding Search Engine four times.

AOL LLC was formerly known as America Online. It is an American global Internet service which is powered by Google. The search results of AOL apear in order of listing of Websites which is administered by Google.

The following analytical picture will give you a fare idea about the market share of various search engines.

Hope, you will find the above information interesting. In my next blog, I will tell you some historical facts of various search engines, so, keep on reading.

SearchWiki- A new feature by Google to personalize your “Google Search”

November 21st, 2008

Today, Google has launched SearchWiki, a way for you to customize search by re-ranking, deleting, adding, and commenting on search results. SearchWiki will allow you to modify and save your results for specific Google searches. Now, you can move the sites that appear in rankings up or down, take them out altogether, leave notes next to specific sites and suggest new sites that are not already in the results. These modifications will be shown to you every time you do the same search in the future. SearchWiki is available to signed-in Google users only. You can view all these changes for the same search in near future.

“The changes you make only affect your own searches. But SearchWiki also is a great way to share your insights with other searchers. You can see how the community has collectively edited the search results by clicking on the “See all notes for this SearchWiki” link. This new feature is an example of how search is becoming increasingly dynamic, giving people tools that make search even more useful to them in their daily lives.” Google

Logged-in Google users can see what other people are saying about a particular site by clicking on “See all notes for this SearchWiki” link. Currently, you are not allowed to keep your search private, anyone can see your notes.

Though, this feature of Google is good for users to personalize their search & save their time for the same search in near future, but it can be an opportunity for spammers to exploit the search. Though, SearchWiki comments and re-rankings will have no affect on the Google algorithm and how it ranks sites for the general Google audience.

Let see how people will take this opportunity….!!!!

Add Colors & Life to Your Inbox

November 20th, 2008

It seems that Google guys are always busy in rolling out the new features. Gmail fans have been building unofficial extensions to spice up their inboxes for a while, but up till now themes haven’t been an integral part of Gmail. Now you can play around with look of Gmail interface with “Gmail Themes”. You can check out the themes by going to ‘setting’ option. Now you can add more colors to your office work also. Gmail has launched 30 odd themes & there’s a shiny theme with chrome styling, another one that turns your inbox into a retro notepad, nature themes that change scenery over time, weather driven themes that can rain on your mailbox, and fun characters to keep you in good company. There’s even an old school ascii theme (Terminal) which was the result of a bet between two engineers — it’s not exactly practical, but it’s great for testing out your geek cred.

Gmail team has also done a minor modification to Gmail’s default look to make it crisper and cleaner.

Google has announced it’s new Search-based Keyword Tool

November 19th, 2008

After keywords suggestion tool it’s again Google’s “Search-based Keyword Tool” turn to be in the spotlight.

Google has announced the launch of it’s new Search-based Keyword Tool which will give you a better idea of what your potential customers are searching for and which keywords you should use. The most interesting thing about this tool is that it finds those relevant keywords which are currently not in your AdWords campaign (if you are running adWords). This info can help advertisers to get positive ROI. This keyword tool will start the process with your web pages and find the keywords that potential customers are searching on to find your products or services. This tool will take the search query data relevant to your website’s content. In other words, this new tool will give you the most relevant keywords to your site those are not in your AdWords/ advertising campaigns.

Based on your URLs, the Search-based Keyword Tool displays a list of relevant user queries that have occurred on Google.

This tool can be used a
